Big Beard Adventure full day excursion is rated number two on trip adviser, and for good reason. It is a full day of just that, adventure, and lots of it! It is about four hours and includes everything you would need to make the best of your trip on St Croix. I would honestly say that this is a must do while on vacation here, I don’t know why it took us three months to get around to it, I am sure we will be back for more soon. Just pack a bag with sunscreen, towels, and anything else you might need and leave the rest up to the crew.
They have two boats, the Renegade which is the Catamaran sail boat, and the Adventure which they take out for their half day trips. You sail out of the Christiansted harbor/boardwalk, and from there it takes about an hour to get to Buck island, which is the first stop on the tour. You pull up to the Buck Island beach which by the way, was rated one of the top ten most beautiful beaches in the world. (I told you, this is a must see) You spend about an hour on the beach, getting to explore Buck Island. There is a 15 minute hiking path you can do, or you can snorkel around the beach, or just chill it like a cruzan beach bum! Mike and I snorkeled a little and saw what was probably the hugest puffer fish I’d ever seen, and we saw a pretty big sting ray!
After checking out the beautiful Buck island, you board the boat and head for the Buck Island national monument reef, where you snorkel for about an hour. This is my absolute favorite part because I get to do my mermaid thing. Honestly words can’t even begin to describe the beauty of this reef. For starters, its huge and if you separate from the group you can get turned around in the huge pieces of coral (which happened to me a few times, haha). It is seriously another world down there. There are hundreds and hundreds of different types of fish, reef sharks, rays, and if you are really lucky you may even spot some sea turtles. My personal experience this last go around was probably one of my most favorite snorkeling experiences I have ever had, and that is saying a lot! I was alone just mermaiding around and I came across an enormous school of these beautiful black fish with blue detail on the dorsal fin and tail. When I say enormous I mean hundreds and hundreds of them. I was swimming side by side and sometimes even right through them when I would free dive down, and they didn’t seem phased by me at all. I followed them as they swam through the reef for what seemed like forever, then I popped my head out of the water and realized how far away from the boat I was, and had to come back to reality.
I made my way back to the boat, where we then sailed to a beach on the east end of St Croix and the crew grilled out for us. They had this cute little Gilligan’s island set up, with an old sail they used for shade. We had our pick of hot dogs, hamburgers, veggie burgers, and local fresh caught mahi mahi. My favorite part about this was that we were surrounded by mongoose, which may seem pretty scary when you actually think about how bad a** mongoose are, or what I like to call island squirrels. I was pretty brave when it came to hand feeding them, they came right up to me and took pieces of meats and breads right out of my hands! No one else in the group was brave enough to feed them, or maybe I was just not being smart!
After I ate my weight in bar b que, we made our way back to the Renegade where we sailed back to the boardwalk and ended our journey. It was a fun filled day of adventure, rum punch, good eating, and great company. The crew of Big Beard Adventures is amazing, and very accommodating and I highly recommend choosing them to take you out on the tour of a life time.
